Company ID, VAT number and a VIES check in Shopify checkout

A business customer enters their company ID and VAT number right in checkout, and we check the number against the VIES register on the spot. A company from another EU country then pays the price without VAT.

Tax exemption

Shopify stores the EU reverse charge on the customer. Checkout uses it to calculate the price without VAT.

With Shopify Plus or without it

Shopify allows fields inside checkout only on the Plus plan. Stores without Plus get the same in the customer account.

With Shopify Plus

The customer enters the company number and VAT ID right in checkout. VIES checks it before payment.

Without Shopify Plus

The customer enters company details in their account. Checkout then applies the VAT-free price on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VIES?
VIES is the European Commission’s system for checking the VAT numbers of businesses registered for VAT in EU countries. It returns whether the number is valid and often the company name, which the customer can copy into the Company field with one click.
When does the customer pay without VAT?
When they have a valid VAT number, are signed in, and the goods ship to a different EU country than the one the store sells from. For delivery within the same country, VAT stays in the price and the block says so.
Does the store need Shopify Plus?
For fields right in checkout, yes. Shopify allows blocks on the checkout pages only on the Plus plan. Saving company details in the customer account works on every plan.
Where are the company details stored?
On the order and in the customer account. The VAT exemption is stored as a tax exemption on the customer and can be removed again with one link.
